Rising Tension in Ingushetia An invisible war is raging on the outskirts of Europe. In Igushetia the government has collapsed as Islamists spread terror, kidnapping and murdering civilians. Who is funding the terrorists, and why here?
'You must not leave the hotel', the guide tells us, 'and if anyone calls do not answer'. A masked gunman sits in the hotel lobby to protect guests from attackers. 'More than 800 people have been killed and 163 kidnapped in the last few years,' says human rights activist Magmed Mutsulgov. 'If you consider that our republic is small, with only 470,000 people, it's clear that this is a big tragedy for us.' The president has been deposed and the police prove corrupt and ineffective. Terrorists are pushing the country towards Sharia law, burning shops that sell alcohol and distributing extremist propaganda. 'I believe they receive money from rich Islamic sponsors in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Jordan', says Caucus expert Enver Kisrev. Could Igushetia become Europe's first Sharia state?
