Cope

Cope New political party Congress of the People aims to transform South Africa into a true multi-party democracy. But will the powerful ANC respond to the challenge with violence, as in neighbouring Zimbabwe?
'COPE gives hope' they cry, here in a small town in Johannesburg, where poverty and health issues have left residents 'sick and tired of empty promises'. Riding on dissatisfaction with the ANC, COPE already has 'over 200,000 members' though formed in barely 2 months. But some worry that the threat they pose to the ANC will only endanger South Africa by provoking violence. ANC youth president Julius Malema vows that he'll 'kill' to protect President Jacob Zuma and ANC deserters have had their pictures publicly burnt. "'Marx, Lenin and Che Guevara told us there will be contra-revolutionaries and sell-outs in the process of engaging in a revolution"' says Julius. Former ANC mayor and current COPE member, Mlungisi Hlongwane is not the only one to fear the ANC's 'culture of political intolerance.'
