Giants Visit The elegant canals of Venice were not designed to accommodate fourteen storey-high cruise liners. The city has always survived on its tourist trade, but increasingly this is threatening to destroy it.
"Look at how the houses vibrate every time a ship passes by!" exclaims a local resident. The cruise liners not only bring in hordes of tourists; they also pollute the city, unsettle the fragile architecture, and flood the canals. Venice makes a profit of 150 million Euros a year from its visitors. Yet, as the Mayor of Venice warns, "It may be that money makes the world go around, but our world is spinning into oblivion."
