Kandahar Trouble

Kandahar Trouble With more than 170 civilian deaths in April alone, the Taliban heartland of Kandahar is proving to be a hot-bed of resistance. A powerful report about the city where "the war will be won or lost".
Kandahar, the symbolic birthplace of the Taliban is proving to be one of the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan. US and Afghan forces are embedded in a historic push to take the city from the Taliban. The dangers facing the troops are very real - with suicide bombers and improvised explosive devices potentially waiting on every street corner. The Taliban terrorise the residents of the city when the troops retreat at night and regularly send death threats to Afghan troops. Some believe that the price of the push is too high - the Governer of Kandahur says simply "Everybody's hurt enough on both sides". However US forces believe that the Taliban are determined to "exert influence" on the city. It seems likely that Taliban attacks are going to increase over the next few months as the Coalition continues it's build-up in the surrounding area. Only time will tell if foreign and Afghan troops can take the Taliban's birthplace away from them.
