Snakes Alive Thousands of escaped or dumped 'pet' snakes are threatening Florida's native widlife. So hunters are being encouraged to capture them and sell their skins, despite criticism from animal rights groups.
Burmese Pythons are threatening the indigenous wildlife in Florida. "Hurricane Andrew damaged pet stores in and around the Miami area and we know that some got loose, now they have reproduced and multiplied", says Gabriella Ferrero of the wildlife commission. A campaign to exterminate the foreign snakes is well under way, but for some it is a bittersweet hunt: "you have to admit that even though they are not supposed to be here, they are magnificent animals", admits python hunter Captian Jeff Fobb.
