Big Man of Europe

Big Man of Europe Media tycoon, philanderer, and court-dodger: Berlusconi is certainly a leader that will go down as legend. But as the protests against him grow stronger, is his reign over Italy already history?
"I tell you, I am the best Prime Minister that Italy has ever had." Speaking at a recent rally, Berlusconi was determined to turn a blind eye to criticism of his turbulent leadership. His ardent supporters may still insist that, "his commitment has always been to the good of the country", yet rally cries of "luckily we have Silvio" are increasingly being drowned out by angry protests. Staging a demonstration in an abandoned high-security prison, the ex-workers of a closed chemical plant have become a nationwide phenomenon and heroes of the resistance. Yet Berlusconi has fought back against such public statements. When newspaper 'Il Giornale' published provocative articles aimed at him, Berlusconi simply bought the paper, sacked the editor and turned it into his own propaganda journal. Now ex-public prosecutor, Antonio Di Pietro, also has his sights on Berlusconi, telling him, "you are not a prime minister, but a rapist of democracy!" Di Pietro flags now dominate any demonstration against 'el Presidente', and these are rapidly increasing. After scandals, judicial affairs and an economic crisis, for many the last act of this modern day Caesar's comedy is already over.
