Wrestling Women A report on the indigenous female wrestlers of La Paz, Bolivia.
Women's wrestling is hugely popular in Bolivia, with crowds flocking to see cholitas fighting it out. Celebrities in their own rights, they still have important battles to win outside the ring. Verluaz Cortez was one of the first cholitas to take to the ring 10 years ago. "They said us girls couldn't do it", she says, "Of course we could and we showed them", she laughs. But the sport has also come to represent the fight for equal rights by the poor indigenous women. They say they're being exploited by promoters, make little money and receive no medical care for their injuries.
