Torturing the Families

Torturing the Families Zeinab made global headlines when her decapitated body was handed to her family by Syrian authorities. This report offers insight into the regime's targeting of innocent family members to get activist suspects.
The Hosni family accuse the Syrian regime of kidnapping Zeinab in order to pressure her brother Mohammed, a key protest leader, to turn himself in. Security forces eventually caught up with Mohammed and his tortured body was also returned to the family with Zeinab's. The family believed they had buried their 18-year-old daughter and yet a fortnight later they were horrified to see Zeinab appear alive on state TV, accusing the family of abuse. "Who is this person that I buried? They are saying my sister is alive", her brother Yusef says agonisingly. The family accuses the Assad regime of using the murder for propaganda. "We don't believe their lies. Is the soul of a person something you play with?".
