Queensferry Rules Quite where the Burry Man tradition comes from nobody really knows any more. But John Nicolls is prepared to go to painful lengths to ensure it's not completely forgotten.
"I'm probably a bit of a weirdo", admits John Nicol. For the last 13 years, on the second Friday in August, John has been covered in sticky, scratchy burrs and paraded around the town of Queensferry for 10 hours. "I blacked out one year. Every year I am slashed to bits". Following his punishing route, it becomes clear John has no idea what the tradition means, and yet he believes, "it demands respect".
