War on Medicine

War on Medicine In Syria, not even hospitals provide sanctuary from the carnage any more. And in the city of Homs, amid the brutal clashes, the strategic importance of hospitals has made them a direct target for attack.
In the wake of brutal bombing campaigns on civilian areas by troops loyal to President Assad, numbers of the horrifically injured are mounting. And, to weaken their opponents even further, loyalist forces are doing all they can to prevent doctors from treating them. "They destroyed all the equipment. They ripped the blood bags and threw them on the ground," says a doctor whose hospital was stormed by regime thugs. If the casualty is an FSA fighter, chances of getting medical care in Syria are almost zero: Abu Yazan had to be smuggled across the border into Lebanon to be treated for his gunshot wounds, received while defending his neighbourhood from the Assad tanks. Doctors themselves are also under threat, with many being forced to flee. "If a doctor is arrested, even for several months, his fate is unknown. Or he's handed back to his family as a corpse."
