Shark Alarm In the last twelve months, nine people have been attacked and one killed by sharks off the north coast of Ballina in New South Wales, Australia. Locals are becoming increasingly fearful and demand action.

Scientists estimate around 1,700 white sharks swim along the Australian coast, and a sudden spike in attacks is turning beaches there into places of fear. "There's still the misconception that the shark net is a barrier", says Barry Bruce, a white shark expert. Millions of dollars have been outlaid by the government on prevention and protection measures, but is the money being well spent?
