Parkinson's Surgery
Brain surgery to control Parkinson's disease
Undergoing brain surgery whilst fully conscious may sound like the stuff of nightmares, but it's exactly what one Englishman did in an attempt to control his Parkinson's Disease.
Michael Holman is undergoing an 11-hour brain surgery. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the 1980s, and has been getting by with dopamine supplements - but the side-effects of the treatment, such as shaking (known as dyskinesia) were proving intolerable. Now, a major operation knows as deep cerebral stimulation may help him regain control of his life.
