Scenes from an occupation
Winner of the Rory Peck award 2000
A brilliantly observed film capturing the last 6 months of Indonesia's occupation of East Timor in 19999 as it writhes between shared autonomy and independence.
Shot by the only filmmaker to have documented everything from before the elections to the final UN verdict of independence and the chaotic scenes that ensured, this film presents a snapshot of a time and place in the midst of a painful transition. The footage also includes eyewitness accounts of citizens, the militia leaders and workers who discuss the role the Indonesian military played in a systematic campaign of destruction, murder and terror throughout the state.
