Cop Violence

The violence plaguing South Africa's police force

Cop Violence Life in Cape Town is dangerous enough - without having to worry about the police killing you, too.
The highest figures of Apartheid deaths, around 750 in 1985 and '86, are being repeated 15 years later. Crime suspects may be beaten to death or shot execution-style. Sometimes, they're guilty of minor assault or theft. Sometimes they've done nothing. Sivuyile and Thiyekile, aged 12 and 16, witnessed the tragic death of their brother and friend Siphiwe, aged 15. Arrested for information about a burglary, the boys were taken to a dam and made to strip and wade to the middle. "They ordered us to collect stones, which they threw at [my brother]." The ordeal ended in the two older boys being tied to a police vehicle and made to run alongside while it drove. Siphiwe tripped, and his head was crushed under the wheels. The case has been kept quiet. But now, Siphiwe's death and other horrific injustices are revealed in this eye-opener on police violence.
