IN VISION Because it's known, when you destroy the body of the woman...
in that destruction of the woman you destroy the whole society
|
| GLORIA – ANSWER IN ENGLISH It is very difficult. Because, if I can say, in Africa all people know that a woman, it's better to be married, to make many children, and they do not know that a woman can be very important for the society, they dont know that a woman can be intelligent, she can be everything, like a man.

|
| STILL – PORTRIAT OF ZAWADI
|
SUBTITLES | ZAWADI – SWAHILI CONT The suffering I went through makes me say
IN VISION to be a woman in Congo is to suffer
because there is no respect for women in Congo
you are treated like trash
if there was respect
for a woman as a human being...
then I would never have been raped
|
SUBTITLES | MONGERA – IN SWAHILI Many of us have been raped
life has become increasingly hard
|
| STILLS - woman in a field - portrait of a woman - portrait of a woman with a scar (Masika)

we would road around looking for work
|
| GLORIA – IN ENGLISH So for me in East part of DRC to be a woman today it's very difficult but with new lawyer with new our constiution they're are trying to give to a woman a place in society.
|
SUBTITLES | TERESE - IN FRENCH Today to be a woman in the Republic of Congo
It's a person who's able to do something in society
I say that because
...in the past a woman wasnt considered part of society
But actually, bearing in mind all the things that women...
have already started doing in society
they're considered to be...
as equals to men
|
| CARD How do you see your future & the future for all women in Eastern congo?
|
| GLORIA I came to study lawyer for become a very strong woman and a very big woman because my dream is to be the first president in DRC, the first lady president in DRC and I think that if I work hard for that and if Im studying and if I have some people who support me, I will go ahead and I will do something better for all woman for all people of Congo
(Fade to black) |
SUBTITLES | ZAWADI – IN SWAHILI The future that I would prefer as a woman
is one that would guarantee us respect to be treated as equals
that's what would make a brighter future
Because in Congo there's no repesct for women
FADE TO BLACK
|
SUBTITLES | MONGERA The future for me right now...
...is hard to predict but so far it's one of suffering
Some women have started to find their way out of this situation
They are living relatively happily where they are
But for us here, the suffering goes on

a future full of light, a future full of hope
|

|
| STILLS - woman at blackboard - women in classroom
|
