These are relatively light cases - they haven't been sent to jail. But the protective labels follow them, and in the case of a relapse, they are subject to the maximum penalties. Labelled by Judge Benales in order to protect society, these offenders now live in fear of vigilante reprisals. James Williams, arrested for improper contact with a 15-year old girl has been pursued in his car: "I was stopped at a traffic light and someone got behind me, and I guess they were fascinated because they had seen a sticker on the back of my car. They wanted to keep an eye on me". There has already been one suicide attempt in Corpus Christi by the marked offenders, and many of them live in fear for their families. Judge Benales however remains unmoved - seeing himself as a man with a mission, convinced that his rulings only serve to prevent further sex crimes. Smoking bans are handed out to everyone he issues with a protective punishment. Some are beginning to question whether his actions are an abuse of human rights
