Sabra and Chatila In April 1982, Lebanese Christian militiamen stormed Beirut's Palestinian refugee camps and massacred their inhabitants. Responsibility fell on Ariel Sharon, then Israeli Defence Minister
"I have nightmares most nights... I've been trying to forget." It was one of the most horrendous massacres of the 20th Century; the mass murder of unarmed men, women and children in Beirut's Palestinian camps. The painful and psychologically scarring memories of the massacres have been compounded by the failure to bring anyone to justice. In particular Ariel Sharon, who as Israeli Minister of Defence oversaw the attacks. An Israeli state enquiry said that Sharon bore "personal responsibility", and yet he stayed in the cabinet.
