The Dividing Line
Division in Cyprus threatens its European future
The Nice treaty has now been ratified, and 12 new countries, including Cyprus, are set to join the EU in 2004. But doubt still remains whether it will work…
Barbed wire and armed troops split the world’s last divided capital, Nicosia. Quality archive pictures show how 30 years of war have led to deep mistrust on each side. Turks to the North want a loose federation and closer alliance with Turkey, while the rich Greeks to the South want to split the country into two zones. If the island is to join the EU in 2004, its two halves will have to put the past behind them, and work together.
