The New York Diplomat

New York Diplomat The Arab League speak out about UN interference in the political systems of the region.
“We are strongly, solidly united against a war on Iraq,” proclaims Yahya Mahmassani, the League’s UN ambassador. He is leading the diplomatic counterattack to a second resolution. It’s easy to understand the League’s concerns. There is a genuine fear that America wants to reshape the entire region and is searching for a pretext to invade. “You can’t just choose a state and go and attack it just because you don’t like the ruler or the system,” claims Mahmassani. His complaint belies a deeper concern that America will target other Muslim states. Arab Nations are also angered by the UN’s treatment of Israel. “Israel has nuclear weapons, chemical weapons and biological weapons,” complains Mahmassani. However, cracks are already appearing in the League’s unified front. Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia all host US forces, while other states are reliant on US aid. How successful this countermeasure will be remains to be seen
