The Battle of the Oranges

The Battle of the Oranges The small, picturesque town of Ivrea overlooks the Aosta valley in the north of Italy.
Founded by the Romans in 100 BC it was once the capital of the Italic Kingdom, but today is better known for its annual carnival; when the peaceful streets are turned into a giant battleground and up to 3000 locals engage in fierce fighting, their only artillery being handfuls of oranges. Excused by principles of liberty and freedom of expression, this zany event should leave a sweet taste in the mouth of any visitor.
