Kabul - Starving to Death
What was Kabul like under Taliban control?
A report on Kabul's desperate attempt to keep their city from Taliban rule and destruction.
The city has been levelled by bombs; children are horrifically injured by landmines on the street; people are poising their families, rather than face a slow death by starvation. Kabul is at breaking point - surrounded by Taliban forces, the city and its people are on the brink of destruction. Their only hope of survival is Defence Minister, Ahmad Shah Massoud, famous leading the resistance against Soviet occupation and winning against all odds. Yet unlike the 80s, international aid and interest in Afghanistan has all but disappeared, leaving Massoud to fight the Taliban with limited resources. ABC Australia speaks to Massoud, and profiles a city on the brink of collapse.
