The Bells Are Ringing Out

The resurrection of Russian bell ringing following the collapse of communism

The Bells Are Ringing Out A profile of Russia's bell ringers.
One man stands attached to nine bells by a web of ropes. Arms, hands and feet yank the ropes to create a symphony of sound. This is Pavel Markelov, guardian of an ancient Russian tradition - bell ringing. Twelve months ago, St. Sophia was a silent wreck. Now her belfries ring out fortissimo. The end of Communist rule has seen a renaissance in bell ringing, but it has also highlighted a shortage not only of bell ringers but also of bells. A factory which manufactures sheet metal for rockets is now making bells as well. In the new Russia, the traditions of the past look for harmony with the technology of the future.
