Honour Killings

Honour Killings Jordan may be one of the most liberal countries in the Arab world but women are still murdered for bringing dishonour on the family.
Sanad was just six years old when he watched his father kill his mother. "She deserved to die. What my father did was right," he states. She had brought dishonour on the whole family by having an affair. Sanad's auntie Eitidal agrees. "It's good to kill someone who does wrong things," she confides. "We say that when your finger becomes full of pus, you cut it off." But it is not just women who have affairs who risk being murdered by their families. Sharuhk was imprisoned in a bathroom for five years after her husband divorced her. Finally, the police arrested her for her own protection. But when she was released, her family decided she had brought the family enough embarrassment. "My brother told my father to shoot me," she states. "He finished all the bullets in the first gun but then another brother asked my father to start with another gun as he noticed I was still alive." She was rushed to hospital with six gunshot wounds. Her father was arrested but all charges against him were dropped. In a society where family honour is regarded as literally a matter of life or death, the prospects of women's rights improving are slim.
