Iran bombs Iraq

Iran shells Kurdish settlements in Iraq

Iran bombs Iraq For centuries Kurdish nomads have freely crossed the mountainous borders which officially split their homeland, but Iran is determined to divide up the Kurds and is spending millions on new roads and military bases along its border with Iraq.
From their mountain vantage points Kurds watch Iranian shells destroy their homes. "It's a crime that they are shelling and bombing us", says villager Rassul Kadir Hassan. "There's nowhere for us and our children to hide. We are only farmers". Torn apart between four countries, the shelling is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of the Kurdish nation. The reasons for the shelling are clouded in politics. Iranian rebels in Northern Iraq believe they are the reason for the shelling, now that they fight for the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran. The KDPI has taken prisoners from their own ranks, accusing them of working for the Iranian secret police. Some freely admit their guilt. "My mission was to join the KDPI and pretend I knew how to cook", says Zahid Azad. "Then I was supposed to poison their food." Iran seems willing to go to considerable lengths to eliminate the Iraqi Kurds.
