Looting the Nation
Since independence, Mozambique's banks have lost almost $400m dollars through corruption. Those investigating the scandal have paid with their lives.
The murder of renowned journalist Carlos Cardoso in November 2000 highlighted the scale of corruption in Mozambique. At the time of his death, Cardoso was investigating large-scale bank fraud and had become an open critic of the government's economic policy. He had received several warnings not to continue. "People who were inconvenienced by his investigations knew the only way to shut him up was to murder him," explains journalist Paul Fauvet. Less than a year after his death, another person investigation bank fraud was also killed. The original police investigation floundered. An anti-corruption unit has now been set-up, but with corruption so ingrained in Mozambique, it seems stopping greed is a long way away. (Rehad)
