Operation Drive out the Trash

Operation Drive out the Trash 'Operation Drive Out the Trash' has left millions of Zimbabweans destitute. Dumped in impoverished rural areas, they now face the threat of starvation
"It's wicked, evil. Humans are being treated just like animals," despairs Pastor Albert Chatindo. For more than 12 years, he's ministered one of the poorest areas of Zimbabwe. Now his parishioners are homeless and afraid. "I had chickens. I had household belongings. They're all gone," laments one woman. After spending all her life in the suburbs, she's now expected to fend for herself in the barren countryside. "If you don't have an ox, you don't have a plough, there is no rainfall, you can't make it out here," states Pastor Chantindo. Mugabe claims to be simply enforcing the law and tearing down illegal settlements. But opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai believes it's a desperate attempt to entrench his position. "This is a reflection of failed economic and social policies." Victims of the evictions have nowhere to turn. The opposition is impotent and officials who speak out are punished. As one victim states: "I just don't know what we will do." (SBS)
