Dujail
Saddam Hussein evades assassination attempt
Crowds of cheering villagers in Dujail surround Saddam, showering him with sweets. But this is no ordinary rally. Less than an hour earlier, on 8 July 1982, a group of militants tried to assassinate Saddam. Terrified of what might happen, the crowd is desperate to prove its loyalty. "We will distinguish between the people of Dujail and a small number of traitors," Saddam vows. But no distinction was made. Hundreds were imprisoned, tortured or executed. Saddam is filmed questioning two bystanders. He orders his men to: "Keep them separate and interrogate them." Now, these orders have come back to haunt him.
