Marwan Barghouti
Ahead of Wednesday's crucial elections, jailed leader Marwan Barghouti gave an exclusive English interview.
To Palestinians, Barghouti is Arafat's true successor - the only man who could lead them to independence. After years of rejecting his political authority, Israel allowed him to speak to journalists. From his cramped cell in Negev prison, Barghouti spoke about life in prison, suicide bombings and Sharon's decision to withdraw from Gaza. He also condemned the killing of Israelis. "No one can justify killing civilians. It should be very clear." In prison, he's become close to Hamas members and claims some credit for their participation in the elections. "Hamas is part of the Palestinian people. They have a right to participate." He believes their participation demonstrates "they believe in democracy and are ready to work according to the rules of democracy." Although serving five life sentences, Barghouti sees himself as a second Mandela and believes he will be released. He's studying leadership by reading Sharon's biography and is optimistic about the upcoming elections. "My people are ready for peace with Israel ... We need a leader who is ready to take critical decisions and take risks."
