Ghana Coffins
In Ghana they believe in giving their dear departed a memorable send-off. Many Ghanaians are dispatched in a coffins shaped like a lobsters or a bottle of Coca Cola.
The Ga tribe place special significance on the power of symbols. "A soldier, for instance, would select a gun shaped coffin", explains coffin maker Paa Willie. It's common for them to spend lavishly on fantasy coffins, even if it takes the family many years to pay off. "If we did not raise enough funds to give my father a fitting burial, we would have brought shame and disgrace onto ourselves", explains one client.
