India - Stolen Protein

India - Stolen Protein A war is being waged in the Indian Ocean for the last remaining fish stocks. International trawlers are emptying the seas, driving Indian fishermen to destitution.
"It's not right that our government supports the international fishing companies", complains Indian fisherman Tom. "Large fleets are destroying the very basis of our existence." Foreign trawlers frequently breach the 30 mile no-fish zone, driving the local fishermen out of business. "We got together to try and drive away the big ships but they pointed their guns at us", complains one fisherman. It's not only the livelihood of Indian fishermen that is at stake. Fish provide a vital source of protein for the Indian population, many of whom can't afford meat. But now, their main source of protein is being exported to Europe. And effluent from fishing farms pollutes the local farmland, making it impossible to grow rice.
