A Cruel Trade
Thousands of animals, exported from Europe to Egypt to be slaughtered, face needless suffering and torment. Secret footage reveals the atrocious conditions in Egyptian abattoirs.
"You won't see worse examples of animal cruelty than this", admits Australia's Agricultural Minister, Peter McGauran. First the cattle is stabbed in the eye, then its back tendons are slashed to stop it escaping. "We are supplying our animals over there to practices which are completely unacceptable," complains animal activist Lyn White. But without heavy international pressure, conditions for animals are unlikely to improve. As Amina Habasa, spokeswomen for the Egyptian animal charity SPARE, admits: "Our government doesn't give any importance to animal welfare."
