Flight to Freedom?
As conditions in West Papua deteriorate, more and more people are desperate to flee to Australia. We accompany one group of refugees on their dangerous journey to safety.
In March 2006, Indonesian troops opened fire on a Papuan protest. In the melee that followed, five police were killed and reprisals began immediately. "We know if we are arrested, we will be killed", states one student. Joshua plans to meet a boatload of 22 students in PNG and help them get to Australia. But the boat sinks en route and only a few survive. Despite their ordeal, the survivors remain determined to push on to Australia. If they make it, they will probably be detained for a few years in Nauro while their application is processed. But even that doesn't dissuade them. "We are dead if we go back so we are ready."
