Al Qaeda's New Frontier?
The Islamist fighters, who took control of Mogadishu earlier this year, pledged to turn Somalia into "the new Afghanistan." Who were they and what were their long-term aims?
A jihadi video, doing the rounds in Mogadishu, shows Islamic fighters training for war at a secret camp. Although not officially endorsed by the Islamic Courts, the video features some of their key figures. It glorifies Al Qaeda and Bin Laden and invites marginalised Muslims everywhere to come and join the uprising. "All Somali citizens are ready for jihad", claims Sheik Sharif, chairman of the Islamic Courts. He complains that; "Ethiopia has been interfering with Somalia for a long time" and states; "It is our responsibility to defend the country". Sharif is considered a moderate within the movement but his declaration of jihad against Ethiopia has raised fears of another regional conflict. Little is known about the long-term aims of the Islamic Courts. For now, there is overwhelming support for them in Mogadishu. After 16 years of anarchy, they chased out the warlords and brought a form of peace and security. "Women were being raped and killed before but now we feel safe", states one woman. Armies of volunteers are rebuilding the city. The young militias, who preyed on society for so long, have been given a cause.
