Living on a Prayer
Kidnappings and shootings have become part of everyday life for the Al Khatib family of Baghdad. Their story reveals the extent security has deteriorated.
Omar al Khatib has no job, no savings and no ration cards for food. But it's the constant security threats that drive him to despair. His brother has been kidnapped by militias. "They called us and said 'your brother is with us and we want $200,000'". The ransom is well beyond their means so Omar doubts he will ever see his brother again. "We've put leaflets with his picture near the morgues. Maybe someone will find his body." Omar's cousin, Waleed, is now permanently disabled after being shot by gunmen. "I don't know why they shot me, I don't belong to any party". Waleed can't have the operation he urgently needs because the doctor has fled the country. Another cousin, Estebrak, was abducted by militias. "They shot me in my leg and face". The kidnappers stopped at several checkpoints but police refused to help him after seeing who his abductors were. He escaped after convincing his kidnappers he was a Shia but; "after what I saw, we've lost hope for the future".
