End of an Era
For decades, the collectivist way of life in Israel's Kibbutzes attracted thousands of volunteers. But now, the country's original Kibbutz is bowing to the winds of market forces.
Kibbutz Degania inspired hundred of other kibbutzes. "Everything was shared. That was the utopia", describes resident Tamar Gal-Sarai. But younger residents resented being paid a set allowance, regardless of how much work they did. Many left for the city. Now Kibbutz members have voted to ditch the collectivist philosophy and pay people for the work they do.
