Spain and the General As the anniversary of Spain's civil war approaches, its legacy is still dividing the country. Victims of Franco's nationalists want their suffering recognised. But others say this will reopen old wounds.
"Those people got monuments. We have no memorials", complains Maximo Molina. "We have a country full of mass graves". His grandfather was a victim of Franco's nationalists and he is campaigning for a full debate on Spain's past. But others credit the pact of silence for transforming Spain into a modern liberal democracy. As Felix Peres from the Franco Foundation states; "We do not want to dig up the past."
