Dying for Votes
Before the election, the police were suspected of murdering hundreds of members of the violent Mungiki militia. Now Kikuyu politicians are accused of enlisting the Mungiki against opposition supporters.
"When people hear we are in an area, they flee", states a Mungiki militia leader. "Nobody votes and the sitting politician wins". Mungiki now controls many of the Kenyan slums, where they run extortion rackets and do dirty work for politicians. "We were in constant fear of them, under their control", states one man.
