The New Babylon
Saddam Hussein's mission to rebuild Babylon
Once boasting the famous hanging gardens and Tower of Babel, little survived after the city's fall. But as the yellow brick walls of Babylon rise from the desert sands once more and white stone palaces stand proud around the ruins, the site's museum is locked and empty to keep out robbers. Sanctions are destroying Iraq's economy and Saddam is an international pariah. In reality Babylon is a tribute solely to former glory, despite Saddam's dreams.
