Voting for Change
Meet the Mirzas, a typical Pakistani family. Like many, they have not experienced the benefits of Pakistan's economic growth. Now, their hopes are pinned on the upcoming elections.
The family of 12 live in a dilapidated house and struggle to get by. "Our development stopped 20 or 30 years ago because these politicians just come and put money in their own pockets", complains Farhat. He hopes life will improve after the elections. But many doubt the elections will be free and fair. According to human rights organizations, freedom of speech is severely limited, journalists are arbitrarily arrested and voting registers falsified. "Whatever Musharraf says will be the law", predicts Nasreen Mirza. Others question if the new leader will be able to stand up to the military or tackle extremists.
