The Lost Children
A sensitive film that weaves a magic tale of Angola's 100,000 street children, separated from their families by the war.
These children survive in one of the most dangerous countries on earth - Angola. With ragged T-shirts, bare feet, scabby-knees and wide-eyes, they admit that they feast on other people's garbage. João dreams of steak and chips. Mingota lives in his own gang's 'castle', a hut in the rubbish, run by their feudal leader King Chico. Squeezing through the cardboard entrance, there are endless warrens where the children have made their home. As happy and innocent as children anywhere, they brandish toy guns, perfect replicas of machine guns improvised from sticks. Jovete reflects on how the war has destroyed his future. He has lost his leg and with it his will to enjoy life. Esperança has come to the Roque Santeiro, to be a prostitute in this notorious red-light district, to be a 'little fourteen'; so called because most of the prostitutes are that young. But the war is over and people are returning to the devastated cities. At the end, the children are asked what they would like to be when they grow up: a mechanic, a karate expert, a joiner, a journalist, are some of the answers.
