The Cold Boundary
Heihe in China is only a stone's throw from Blagoveschensk in Russia, but until recently it was a border that few crossed. Booming trade is now changing that. 'There are so many Chinese here', says Handerlin, a Russian trader, 'it is terrible - it feels like we are in China'. Such feelings are not unusual; on both sides of the Amur river tensions run high. 'Attacks, robberies and murders are common', says the Vice Mayor of Suifenhe in China. 'Often people simply disappear'. Yet, experts say both governments have little idea of what is happening in this remote region. This film is a fascinating glimpse into an underground conflict.
