What happens when a horse gets too old to work? We look at the debate between animal rights protestors fighting to save the lives of old and ailing horses against those selling horses for slaughter.
In 2007 Texas and Illinois introduced state laws banning the slaughter of horses. "There are sometimes too many dogs and cats. We don't ship them to a slaughterhouse and export the meat," tells Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society of the US. Yet some believe that slaughter can be the most humane way for old horses to end their lives. "I'd rather see them slaughtered than starved."
