Waiting for Philip
Pacific Islanders who worshipped Prince Philip
For the Kastom people of the Pacific Island of Tanna, the Duke of Edinburgh is more than royalty: he is regarded as a deity.
The Kastom people of Tanna's Yaohnanen village believe Prince Philip was an ancestral spirit who emerged from a volcano to marry the queen. 'When I met him, I felt so proud I almost cried because my ancestors never met him and I met him on their behalf', says chief Yapa. 'From their point of view, [Prince Philip was] not a part of our world. He's a part of their world,' says one anthropologist.
