Carving Destiny

Kathmandu's creative carvers

Carving Destiny Stone carving has been practised for centuries in Nepal, but changing values threatened to consign these skills to history. Now, however, an influx of tourists hungry for a taste of 'authentic' Nepal is bringing the tradition back to life.
The influx of tourists is ensuring that the ancient art of stone carving in Kathmandu is undergoing a revival. Through the ages the icons of gods have been cast in perfect soft-stone carvings all over the spiritual city. Changing values though cast stone carving aside until the old art was almost lost. Yet a few old carvers nurtured the skills in their families, so that a new generation of carvers and beautiful objects have been born.
