India has one of the world's highest illiteracy rates. Now, one of the country's biggest successes, the Bollywood film industry, is being used as an unconventional tool to tackle one of its biggest failings.
Brij Kothari, founder of PlanetRead, has spent 15 years researching the impact of same-language subtitling on literacy. In what has become an enormously effective tool, Brij subtitles song and dance numbers in films. The results are startling; with young and old subconsciously learning their native written language. "Essentially what we've created is a context in which reading becomes an automatic process and you don't have to even think about it", Brij explains.
