Saving Mary Jane

Saving Mary Jane Filipino maid and single mother Mary Jane Veloso was to be executed in Indonesia with eight other alleged drug traffickers, including the Bali Nine Duo. This is the incredible story of her last minute reprieve.
Eight condemned men were shot that night on Indonesia's 'Execution Island', including reformed Bali Nine members Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. How Mary Jane alone was spared the firing squad is a story of remarkable international collaboration. "We connected across the ocean if you like" says Australia-based barrister Felicity Gerry. "I've never even met her but there I am sitting in my office and I've got the piece of law that can save her and I'm just so glad that I answered that email." That email was a chain message begging for help for Mary Jane, who insists she was a victim of human trafficking and that the 2.6kg of heroin found in her luggage by Indonesian authorities was planted by a neighbour who tricked her. "She was not selling, she was not buying, she was not using" says Filipino lawyer Edre Olalia. With his and the international teams' efforts, Mary Jane avoided death - yet remains imprisoned. Now the legal team is fronting up to its next challenge: getting Mary Jane off death row and back home to her family. "If you shoot her, you might as well shoot every exploited person."
