Monte Carlo 1951 Rally
At the start of the XXIst Monte Carlo Rally in 1951, 300 drivers set out from cities across western Europe. This documentary follows the race towards Monte Carlo, Monaco, as the drivers hope to secure their place in the final part of this famous rally.
Over the three days and nights, the drivers report to regular check points within prescribed time limits. Once allowances for sea crossings have been made, the drivers' times are then recorded. As the drivers approach the finish line, they must pass an acceleration and braking test. With the first stage complete, the drivers can rest. In the morning the cars will be inspected and points deducted for mechanical failure. For the top 50 drivers, the final part of the rally involves a demanding six lap race around Monte Carlo. Louis Rosier crosses the line to secure first place in his class. Louis Chiron gives an immaculate display, setting a lap record. British driver Colin Vard is third in the general classification, and Mike Couper's Bentley is first in its class. Jean Trevoux secures the overall win for an impressive fourth time.
