Diving El Hierro's Submarine Volcano
A team of scientists are investigating the active submarine volcano at El Hierro in the Canary Islands. Using a manned submersible, they have brought unique underwater footage and samples back to the surface.
"It's like descending into a dream because it gets darker as you go down", says expedition leader Mark Hannington. With researchers from across the globe he is traversing the active volcanic depths of the Atlantic. It is their mission to uncover the mysterious effects volcanic eruptions have on the world's oceans. "It gets very exciting, very intense", he says.
