The Politics of Sport
Playing for Palestine in a politically fraught world
Palestinian football players need Israeli permission to train in each other's territory, and have sometimes been unable to get on flights for international fixtures.
The team manager sees football as part of the Palestinian struggle for freedom. Ziad al Kurd started playing football in the streets of Gaza. His father has been in an Israeli jail for 11 years. Most of the world's 8 million Palestinians are exiles. Some like Amjad have returned to play for the team. He lives in a UN refugee camp in the West Bank, but has rarely trained with Ziad. When the team comes 3rd at the Pan-Arab games in Jordan it's clear that whilst Palestinians don't have a state, the team is a symbol of future hope.
