Continental Drift
Each year thousands of migrants risk their lives crossing the sea to the Italian coast. Wrecks are frequent and devastating but dedicated teams of rescuers work tirelessly to bring them ashore safely.
"Even though continents are still, we have a human drift". The island of Lampedusa receives hundreds of migrants each year, most of them rescued from the sea by the coastguard. The boats are overcrowded and unsafe, yet despite the risk many are desperate to start new lives. Aziz, a translator for the police, understands their crisis: "When I came knocking this country opened its doors to me. I'm proud to be giving back".
